Interactive demo benchmarks 2026: What 300,000+ sessions reveal

Across more than 300,000 HowdyGo demo sessions, 65.5% of impressions turned into engagement. Half of those engaged viewers reached the end. The data covers four years of public demo activity, from July 2022 to July 2026.

Instructional demos performed especially well, reaching 70.3% engagement and 57.2% completion among engaged viewers. Clear guidance and concise copy helped people move through the experience. When teams had a larger product story to tell, collections of focused demos gave viewers a way to choose the chapters that mattered to them.

What makes a good interactive demo?

What is a good demo engagement rate?

In a typical demo, nearly two-thirds of impressions became engagements. Half of those engaged viewers went on to finish. That gives teams a practical baseline: 65.5% engagement and 50.0% completion among engaged viewers.

Read the two numbers together. Engagement tells you whether the opening earns a second interaction. Completion tells you whether the rest of the demo holds attention. A homepage overview and a task-specific help demo attract viewers with different levels of intent, so compare demos that do similar jobs.

Each new viewing session for a published demo counts as one impression. It becomes an engagement when the viewer reaches step two. A completion is recorded when an engaged viewer reaches the end.

How-to demos vs product tours

Feature and task how-tos made up 47.0% of the demos analyzed, followed by product tours at 42.3%. Together with onboarding and training, instructional demos accounted for 56.1% of the sample.

What teams built was tied to a noticeable difference in viewer behavior. Instructional demos recorded 70.3% engagement and 57.2% completion among engaged viewers. Product tours recorded 55.2% engagement and 37.3% completion.

The more detailed categories tell the same story. Feature and task how-tos had 71.4% engagement and 60.0% completion among engaged viewers. Onboarding and training demos recorded 67.2% engagement and 49.7% completion. Broad tours sat below both.

How to apply this: Begin with something the viewer wants to accomplish. CloudForecast, for instance, built a focused demo around finding wasted AWS spend with its ZeroWaste feature. "Take a tour of our platform" leaves the viewer to work out why the tour matters.

Guidance keeps viewers moving

What was consistent across the demos was the value of clear guidance. A concise first step was associated with 9.3 percentage points higher engagement and 10.4 points higher completion. A focused zoom-ripple cue was associated with 4.9 points higher continuation to the next step.

A viewer should not need to decode the interface before making the first click. A short opening can explain what they will learn and point them towards the first action. Later, zoom and ripple cues are most useful when they draw attention to one specific control. Covering every step in movement would turn the cue into background noise.

Headings also gave viewers a sense of place. Demos that titled every step recorded 33.2% completion per impression. Demos that titled only some steps recorded 22.4%. This comparison is descriptive, but it supports a straightforward editing habit: tell people what each step is for.

Plain action language produced another sizeable difference. Demos whose copy used click-oriented language recorded 68.0% engagement and 33.1% completion per impression. Demos without it recorded 58.6% engagement and 25.7% completion. The gaps were 9.4 percentage points for engagement and 7.4 points for completion.

How to apply this: Use annotation copy such as "Click to see how it works." Tell the viewer what to click and what they will see next.

Concise copy keeps viewers moving

Doubling the words in a step was associated with a 0.4 percentage-point decline in next-step reach. The effect was modest, but it moved consistently in one direction.

The curve makes the coefficient easier to interpret. Compared with a step containing no annotation copy, the estimated change in next-step reach was -1.1 percentage points at five words, -1.5 at 10 words, -1.9 at 20 words, and -2.3 at 40 words.

Those are not huge penalties. The data does not support an arbitrary word limit, and a missing explanation can be worse than a longer one. Use enough copy to explain the value or the action. Then stop.

Completion by demo length

Engagement stayed between 65.2% and 67.7% across every measured length band. Completion did not. It fell from 62.8% for 6–8-step demos to 31.8% for demos with 21 or more steps.

Viewers started long and short demos at similar rates, but completion declined as step count increased.

Completion uses the engaged-viewer denominator and reports the median rate across demos. The chart intentionally omits the nearly flat engagement series.

People were about as willing to begin a 21-step demo as a 6-step one. The difference appeared after they started. If viewers never reach the later steps, those steps add little to the story, no matter how important they looked while the demo was being built. Brevity gives more of the product narrative a chance to be seen.

A focused 6–8-step demo is a sensible place to start when completion matters. Some products need more room, and some viewers arrive looking for detail. When the subject cannot fit into a short path, collections offer another way to organize your product story.

Collections for larger product stories

Collections recorded higher engagement than one long demo in every large-story band measured. In the most conservative comparison, 21–50 steps, collections recorded 46.6% engagement against 36.7% for one long demo.

The 21–50-step band is the headline because it gives the most conservative comparison. The result is observational.

The gap also appeared in the longer bands. Collections recorded 78.2% engagement against 50.8% for one long demo at 51–80 total steps. At 81 or more steps, the comparison was 65.9% against 43.1%. The median collection contained four demos, and 9.4% of scored demos belonged to a collection.

A demo collection presents several focused walkthroughs as chapters of a larger product story. Viewers can choose the relevant chapter without clicking through every subject that comes before it.

Flagsmith grew from one demo to a demo centre

Flagsmith started with one short demo linked from its homepage. Once that worked, the team built focused demos for its highest-traffic feature pages and brought them together in a demo centre. More than 25% of visitors to the centre viewed multiple demos.

How teams use HowdyGo

Build and maintenance time

In the analyzed HowdyGo workflows, 68.6% of demos were built on the same day and 88.9% were shipped within a week. Of the maintenance sessions measured at least seven days after creation, 92.6% lasted less than 15 minutes.

Build time is the span from creating a demo through the final edit associated with its initial build. "Shipped" means it received its first external view.

Maintenance was similarly quick: 92.6% of editing sessions measured at least seven days after creation took less than 15 minutes.

Only 10.8% of demos were edited more than 30 days after creation. That figure needs a light touch. Some demos remain accurate without an edit. Others support a short campaign or product release and do not need to live indefinitely.

Teams can create an interactive demo quickly, but speed is only useful if the capture remains editable after publishing.

Editing demos after capture

Editing appeared in 43.3% of demos, while 17.4% used blur. Among demos with hidden or blurred content, the median was nine regions.

Editing can mean changing text or images after capture, removing interface elements that do not matter to the story, or replacing a customer name with a safe example. Blur and hidden regions serve a narrower purpose: keeping details out of a public walkthrough.

These figures show product behavior, not security or compliance. The useful observation is that teams rarely treat a capture as untouchable source material. Figure, for example, uses interactive demos to show a financial platform without putting real financial data in front of prospects and partners.

Demo creation across teams

Users in multi-user organizations published an average of 3.1 demos each, compared with 2.3 in solo organizations. More than half of multi-user organizations had multiple people creating demos.

Among multi-user organizations, 54.0% had more than one demo creator. Across the analyzed output, 51.7% of demos came from organizations with multiple creators.

The invitation data shows how quickly that can happen. Organizations that invited a colleague did so after a median of 1.2 days, while the median time to a second user was 9.2 days. Across demo-producing organizations, 8.1% sent an invite.

The 3.1 versus 2.3 comparison does not prove that adding users causes everyone to publish more. Mature accounts may have more use cases and more reason to involve a team. Shared ownership, however, did not coincide with lower output per person in this sample.

Where teams use interactive demos

Share links were the most commonly recorded use, but demos also appeared on marketing sites, in training and documentation, inside products, in presentations, and in sales enablement. GIF export was used by 76.1% of paying organizations in the analyzed snapshot.

A demo can appear in more than one category, so these figures are not meant to sum to 100%. They describe recorded uses and placements rather than the complete distribution of every demo.

GIF adoption points to another kind of reuse. It does not tell us whether a GIF performs better than an interactive embed. It shows that teams take captured product material and turn it into a standalone asset for a different context. The same source can support a website embed, a share link, or an automated sales demo.

How to benchmark your demo

Read demo analytics as a sequence. Each stage answers a different question, and each one suggests a different edit.

1. Get enough impressions to learn

Impressions count the people who see your demo. If the number is low, later rates will swing sharply with every new viewer and it will take longer to see whether an edit worked.

Start with placement. Put the demo where the product claim is already being made: a relevant feature page, a dedicated demo page, documentation, or a share link sent in an active deal. A thumbnail and heading should tell people what they will learn before they open it.

2. Improve initial engagement

Initial engagements are the viewers who interact with the demo and reach its second step. The HowdyGo benchmark is 65.5%.

When engagement is weak, work on the opening before rewriting the entire demo. Make the first step concise, name the outcome, and give the viewer an explicit first action. The benchmark found +9.3 percentage points of engagement for concise openings and +9.4 points for plain click-oriented language.

3. Find progression drop-offs

Progression shows how far viewers travel and which steps they revisit or leave from. Look for the first sharp drop, then inspect that step and the one immediately before it.

Common fixes are practical: remove a step that repeats the previous point, shorten the annotation, make the click target obvious, or add a focused cue. The zoom-ripple finding is useful here; it was associated with +4.9 percentage points of next-step reach when used to draw attention to a specific control.

Length belongs in this stage too. Viewers in the benchmark started long demos at similar rates, but completion declined from 62.8% for 6–8 steps to 31.8% for 21 or more. If the detail is valuable but the demo is too long, move it into another focused demo and connect the two in a collection.

4. Learn from completions and repeat views

Completions capture viewers who reach the end of the demo. The benchmark for completion among engaged viewers is 50.0%.

A completed demo is also a chance to inspect what happened along the way. A viewer who returns to an earlier step may have found it useful, or may have needed another look to understand it. Compare completion and repeat-view behavior across demos with the same purpose, then test one change at a time.

5. Track the actions viewers take next

Actions taken by leads show which CTA buttons viewers use after or during the demo. This is where demo engagement connects to the rest of the funnel: trial signups, booked calls, another demo, or a relevant product page.

Look at the primary button before adding more CTAs. Does it match the intent of the demo and the commitment the viewer is ready to make? HowdyGo customers have improved actions taken by 10–15% simply by changing that primary button.

Methodology and limitations

This benchmark covers more than 300,000 public HowdyGo demo sessions recorded from 28 July 2022 through 27 July 2026. The production snapshot was updated on 28 July 2026. It excludes editor traffic, flagged internal events, known bots and automated browsers, identifiable HowdyGo traffic, copy-free export paths, and demos with fewer than 10 views where relevant.

An impression is one public session for one published demo. A viewer engages by reaching the second step. An engaged viewer completes a demo by reaching its end. Repeated raw events are reduced to one session-by-demo record before rates are calculated.

Headline percentages are medians of per-demo rates, which prevents a few high-traffic demos from dominating the benchmark. Behavioral comparisons use at least 30 cleaned external sessions per demo or comparison cell. Paid-customer cohorts are used where available; the use-case and collection comparisons use the wider cleaned cohort.

The copy analysis compares steps within the same demo and controls for step position, playback behavior, and relevant step features. Zoom findings compare matched step configurations. The heading and plain-language comparisons are descriptive rather than experimental.

These are observational results. Audience intent, placement, distribution channel, product complexity, and demo quality may differ between groups. The benchmark does not compare interactive demos with video, trials, live demos, or pages without a demo, so it cannot establish conversion lift or revenue impact.

A first demo does not need to explain the whole product. Pick one task your buyer cares about, show the shortest credible path to the result, and make the next click obvious. If the story grows, give each job its own chapter.
